Uploading images or files
-
Click the "Upload files" tab on top of your workspace page.

-
On the files page, click the "Upload files" button.

Note: If this button is disabled and cannot be clicked, you may not have the appropriate permission on the workspace to upload. Another reason for the button being disabled is that you only have permission to upload to a specific folder. Click on the individual folders of the workspace, and if the button becomes active on any of them, then you have permission to upload, but only to that specific folder.
-
Select the file you'd like to upload. If you'd like to upload multiple files, please hold down the CTRL key (to add a file to the list of selected files) or the SHIFT key (to select a range of files) when choosing files from your computer. NOTE: To ensure a smooth uploading experience, please avoid uploading files with extremely long file names. If you're having an issue uploading a file with a long name, please try renaming the file and attempting to upload the file again. Also, you may only upload up to ten files at a time with this uploader.

The uploader may look slightly different, depending on your operating system, however you should still be able to select multiple files to upload.
-
Click the "Open" or "Select" button to upload the files to your workspace.

-
A window will then pop-up to show you the progress of your files to be uploaded. Cancelling queued uploads is easy, just click on the "Cancel Uploads" button.

-
Your successfully uploaded files will appear in your workspace's list of files.
Editing or Updating existing uploaded Files
For smooth editing or updating of existing files, please follow these steps:
1) Download the file to your computer's desktop or other convenient location;
2) Open the file from where you saved it on your computer;
3) Make any desired changes to the file;
4) Save the file without modifying the original file name;
5) Upload the modified version of the file to your workspace.
The result is that the new file version will be saved as the newest revision of the file (see image below).

The advantage of this system of revisions is that you can go back and access previous file revisions to change the revision that will be displayed as the current version of the file. To access previous revisions click on the number in the "Revs" column. You'll be presented with a screen which lists every revision of your file:

If you have the appropriate permission on the workspace, you can delete the revisions or revert the file to a previous version. You can also click on the specific date and time of the file to view the version of the file without reverting.
If you don't see the "Delete" or "Revert" links when viewing file revisions, then you don't have the permission on the workspace to perform those actions.
Adding images or files to workspace pages
- Go into "Edit Mode" on any page by clicking the edit tab.
- Click "Images and Files" tab under the "Insert Links" "Page Tool" on the right-side of your screen;
- Click the Upload Files link to find the file on your computer;
- When you locate the file, select it, then click “upload”. After uploading, the file will appear in your file list.
- Click on the text of the file name to insert it into your workspace.
Note: If you want to see a list of your files and pictures without going into "Edit" mode, click the “Upload/view files” link while viewing the workspace. From here you may also rename and delete files or pictures from there. However, only Editors and Admins can remove files. If you don't see the option to delete in the Pages & Files manager, then you probably don't have permission on the workspace to delete files
TIP: Have a lot of images and files and don't like scrolling through a huge list to find the one you want? Use your browser's "Search" function (CTRL+F) to find the image or file in a flash!
Adding alternate text to an image

Alternate text is the text that gets displayed in place of an image in case the image fails to load. In many browsers, the alternate text of an image is displayed if the mouse hovers over an image for a period of time.
To add the alternate text on an image, first select the image you want to add the text to by clicking on it. Then, go into edit mode and right click the image. If you're on a Mac, and don't have a right mouse button, hold down the Command button, and click the image again. Choose "Image Properties."
Then, enter the text into the "Alternative Text" field. This will create an alt tag on your image.
Linking to Files on your computer or network
In nearly all cases, your web browser's built in security will not allow you to execute links to files on your computer or your local networks. This is not a restriction that PBworks has created, it's built right into your web browser by the authors of the web browser. However, there is an option that may work for you.
Instead of trying to create an active link to a local file, simply copy the file path to the file and paste it into your workspace page. For example, if you wanted to broadcast the location of "introduction.doc" in your workspace to others who share your computer or network, you can paste in a path that will look like these.
C:\documents\introduction.doc
\\server001\distribution\introduction.doc
Once the users copy the location, they can paste the path into the File Open dialogue in the application that they are using. On a PC, a user could also paste the path into the "Run" box in the "Start" menu.
Resizing Images
Using your mouse
To set the size quickly using your mouse:
- When in editing mode, click the picture you want to resize in order to select it.
- Click and hold on the lower right corner of the picture and drag to make the picture bigger or smaller. The new image size will be displayed in pixels in a Width x Height format.
- When you've achieved the desired size, release the mouse button to complete the resizing process.

Using precise sizes
To precisely set the size of an image you can also edit the Image Properties:
- Select the image you want to resize by clicking on it.
- Right-click (or Command+click on the Mac), on the selected image and select image properties

- In the Width or height field, you can manually enter in precise pixel sizes. By default the height and width are in locked proportion, signalled by the lock icon, so that any change you make to one, will make a proportional adjustment to the other. This is the best way to keep the image's height and width in proportion. To unlock them, just click the lock icon. Then, you can set both width and height to whatever value needed.

Image file sizes
Changing the image size on the workspace does NOT change the actual file size of the image, so if it is extremely large, it will take just as long to load as it did before. If you need to resize a file to make it load faster (and preserve image quality), you will need to resize it on your own computer, then upload the smaller file. One useful program for this purpose is Irfanview , which is a lightweight image editing program for Windows. Any other image editing program is also suitable.

Deleting Images and Files
Important: Deleting pages and files is an irreversible action, and once a page or file has been deleted it cannot be recovered. The backups we make of your workspace are in the event of catastrophic system failure, and cannot be used to retrieve specific pages and files on your workspace. In order to minimize the risk of deletion, you may want to put your users' permission level to "Writer." Writers can edit pages and add files, but cannot delete.
Please delete carefully, and at your own risk.
Method 1
- Click the Pages & Files tab on your workspace:

- Find the page or file you want to delete in the list. Check the box next to the file you wish to delete. You can check more than one page or file if you want to delete more than one page or file at a time.

-
Click the Delete button. You'll also have to click a dialogue box to make sure you want to delete the page or file. The confirm dialog will tell you how many pages you're about to delete. Click the "OK" button in the confirm dialog box to delete the page or file.

-
Please note that all links to the deleted page will be broken. You can find which pages link to the deleted page by doing a Search for "src:<page name>" (with spaces in the page name replaced with +s), and then remove the links from each page.
Method 2 (Deleting Pages)
- On the page you want to delete, enter edit mode, by clicking Edit.

- To the right, above the insert links box, are the page tools to rename and delete a page, click "Delete this page".

- Because this action is only for one page, the confirm dialog looks a bit different. Click "OK" to delete the page.

Blocked file uploads
Your ability to upload will come back after a few minutes. We've implemented some aggressive spam filters that are mistakenly blocking out legitimate use of our service. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused, we know about this, and we plan on improving it.
Specifically, if you upload HTML or Java Script files, you may be targeted by our spam filters and blocked for 10 or 15 minutes. After the blocking time is up, you'll have access to your file uploads again.
